Job Description Summary

The Music Therapy program at Nazareth University invites applicants for a 9-month full-time tenure-track faculty position in the School of Music (Music Therapy), beginning in August, 2025.

Applicants with expertise in culturally relevant clinical practice and teaching, behavioral health, and supporting student research are especially sought for this position. The qualified applicant will join colleagues within the School of Music, the College of Interprofessional Health and Human Services, and Nazareth University who value collaboration, innovation, diversity, equity, and inclusion in their shared work of preparing the next generation of music therapists.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Teaching responsibilities in the undergraduate and graduate programs aligned with areas of expertise and experience, including undergraduate and graduate research and advising culminating projects.

  • Additional opportunity to teach summer courses

  • Support student clinical and internship supervision

  • Graduate Program Director – The successful application will be expected to take on the responsibilities of graduate program director within the first year of employment, including graduate program director responsibilities over summer (with stipend)

  • Contribute to curriculum review and development

  • Participate in student recruitment activities

  • The position also carries an expectation of departmental and university committee service, academic advising/mentoring, the continued pursuit of professional scholarship, and representation at community events and professional music therapy conferences.

The Nazareth Music Therapy program, established in 1980, provides quality musical, clinical, and academic preparation for over 60 undergraduate, equivalency, and masters students, and its graduate program qualifies students for the New York State License in Creative Arts Therapy. The program boasts the Lipson Music Therapy Clinic within the York Wellness and Rehabilitation Institute, where music therapy, art therapy, speech-language pathology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and social work students and faculty collaborate to provide person-centered care for community members of all ages. The Rochester community has the highest concentration of music therapists in New York State outside of New York City, providing a plethora of opportunities for clinical training and professional connection.

The position will begin in August, 2025 at the Assistant or Associate rank, commensurate with experience. The successful candidate will be appointed to the School of Music, with opportunities and expectations for collaboration with the College of Interprofessional Health and Human Services.

Essential Functions

Required Education, Experience, Technology and Skills

-Terminal degree (PhD) in music therapy or a closely related field; ABD considered

-A minimum of 12 semester hours or equivalent of graduate credits in music therapy beyond undergraduate equivalency requirements.

-Current Board Certification in Music Therapy

-New York State License in Creative Arts Therapy ( LCAT ) preferred; applicants without LCAT will be expected to obtain license prior to receiving tenure

-A minimum of five years of full-time clinical experience in music therapy or its equivalent.

Preferred Education, Experience, Technology Applications and Skills

-clinical experience in behavioral health.

-experience guiding student research.

-completed training in one or more advanced models of music therapy (e.g. Creative Music Therapy, Guided Imagery and Music, Vocal Psychotherapy, Analytical Music Therapy).

-demonstrated record of scholarly achievement through presenting, publication, or professional service, commensurate with professional experience and stage of career.
