The Development Associate will report to the Director of The Institute of Optics to collect, analyze and distribute information to facilitate broader, integrated corporate conversations as coordinated through The Institute of Optics.
The Development Associate will serve as the project, stewardship, special events, and data/collections reporting specialist for The Institute of Optics to help The Institute develop a holistic, business-engagement approach to build more industry partnerships that match interests around fundraising, recruitment and career placement. This role will track and help plan and implement corporate development activities and corporate donor stewardship, recognition programs, special events planning, as well as provide writing, prospect research and website support, and work in collaboration with other university offices. This individual may be called upon to assist with introductory, routine and new, corporate solicitations, preparing research ports and tracking progress. S/he will cultivate broad knowledge and understanding of all university research enterprises and develop best practice models that capitalize on industry interests to grow university / corporate relationships, with the ultimate goal of advancing corporate support for The Institute of Optics’ Industrial Associates Program.
This position necessitates good judgment, multi-tasking ability, strong customer relation skills, and excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. A team player approach, an ability to communicate effectively and comfortably with senior corporate executives and university leadership is essential. This person must be an inquisitive, proactive, mature individual with the ability to be flexible and adjust to changing priorities and challenges in a busy environment. Occasional evening or weekend work is expected in preparing for special events and staffing. Limited regional and national travel may be required.
60% Industrial Associates (IA) Program
Participate in core group planning (Institute of Optics faculty and staff) for biannual meetings, registrations, company connection showcases, summer courses, membership solicitations and processing of membership fees.
Primary responsibility for current membership retention/annual renewals plus new membership recruitment while increasing membership 20-25% annually. Growth is dependent in part on the active number of optics graduates to meet company hiring opportunities.
Industrial Associates (IA) event planning including travel arrangements, meeting itineraries, presentations, facilities, audio/video equipment, etc. for events such as research symposiums, corporate donor meetings, on-campus and off-campus visits, internal faculty strategy sessions and special events.
Attend selected Optics related events such as Photonics West, OSA, OptiFab, Light and Sound Interactive (LSI), RRPC, and campus career expos for engineering, tech, and data science.
20% Work with The Institute of Optics to facilitate broader, integrated corporate conversations as coordinated through The Institute
Coordinate, steward, and cultivate existing corporate relationships.
Monitor, designate, and inform The Director of The Institute to promote a coordinated and integrated outreach approach.
Prospect new leads, including qualification and discovery contacts or visits, then transition warm leads to appropriate internal stakeholder or keep when appropriate.
Coordinate Corporate IA Program Memberships.
20% Support The Institute’s Corporate Connections/Pipeline Development
Manage Prospecting Landscape.
Explore/assess new leads both internal and external.
Maintain system accuracy; assess system efficiency.
Oversee/manage new systems and analysis reports.
Works with IA team and key stakeholders to plan and implement stewardship and recognition of corporate donors and corporate matching gift donors.
Assists with development of stewardship reports, presentations, and correspondence.
Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred and at least (2-3 years) of industry sales and training or equivalent professional development experience with evidence of ability to interface effectively with faculty across multiple divisions of a research university, excellent information systems, data analysis, writing, communication, customer service, and problem solving skills. Familiarity with higher education a plus.
Skills and Abilities:
Experience working in fundraising.
Sales and/or training experience in industry – ideally in optics or optics-related field.
A working fluency with optics and the optics-related industry (or other fields as it relates to assisting CBE colleagues) and the ability to work effectively with both corporate and academic leaders.
A proven track record of solid relationship development with both internal and external constituencies (internal = optics faculty & staff; external = IA companies and IA membership prospects).
Excellent analytical, critical reasoning and time-management skills as well as communication skills and attentiveness to detail.
Must possess personal dynamism, a positive attitude, a sense of humor and the ability to multi-task and work in a high project-volume environment.
Must demonstrate credibility and engage and inspire the respect of multiple constituencies.
Must be flexible, highly-motivated and dedicated with the proven ability to work as part of a team.
Should have good critical analysis skills, demonstrate an ability to work as a member of a team, a strong willingness to learn new skills, and possess flexibility and patience.
Advanced computer skills working in Microsoft Office, in particular Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Word are required. Knowledge of the University’s internal data systems (e.g., OASIS, COGNOS, COEUS, TABLEAU, and SALESFORCE) or experience with enterprise fundraising systems, is a plus.
