Detailed Job Description:

We are seeking a self-motivated, creative collaborator to lead our Native American Future Stewards Program (FSP). The Director will work across campus and with community partners to ensure the success of our Native American/Indigenous scholars. Daily operations

  • Maintains the daily operations of the Native American Future Stewards Program

  • Serve as the primary source of communication to FSP students, members of the RIT community and administrators at high schools with Native American students within New York State.

  • Serve as the program’s liaison to internal RIT departments.

  • Develop an action plan (this includes budget allocation and program activities etc.) for each fiscal year.

  • Monitor budget expenditures of FSP and those of program grants to ensure fiscal responsibility

  • Supervise FSP student worker(s) and/or FSP Staff.

Academic and Social Support

  • Implement effective programs that provide academic and social support to students participating in the Native American Future Stewards Program using current research and best practices.

  • Work with DDI’s AVP and Director of Assessment and Research Management to collect data concerning student participation, student success and the effectiveness of FSP program services and activities.

  • Utilize this data to inform the effectiveness of program services, activities and allocation of resources. Provide guidance to FSP students, monitor their academic progress, and assist with the resolution of academic and personal challenges.

  • Serve as staff advisor, mentor, and advocate to two student organizations (AISES and NASA) and assist in the development of club activities, club recruitment and engagement, and club budget allocation.

  • Work collaboratively with college advisors, student support programs and other relevant campus community members to implement programs designed to increase retention of Native American students and eliminate achievement gaps.

  • Collaborate with Division partners to identify eligible students and assist with placement of FSP students in order to connect students to tutoring services, peer mentoring, and student participation in summer preparatory program and professional development opportunities including workshops, research, and conferences.

  • Promote the emotional health and well-being of FSP students.

Recruitment and retention

  • Assists Enrollment Management with the recruitment of Native American Students to RIT.

  • Develop a recruitment plan for Native American students consistent with the FSP annual action plan and collaborate with RIT Admissions Directs & oversees the media visibility and the internal and external promotion of the program through electronic and print communication and works collaboratively with the DDI MARCOM team and University Communications to promote the visibility of the program.

  • Serve as the spokesperson for external audiences.

  • Work with external organizations with a National presence (Winds of Change, United National Indian Tribal Youth, American Indian Science and Engineering Society) to advertise and recruit Native American students to RIT.

  • Work with tribal education administrators and staff to schedule and organize campus visits, participation in Native American Outreach Day and in school visits.

  • Represent the program on and off campus at professional activities and recruitment events (Schools with high concentrations of Haudenosaunee students, regional college fairs and national conferences.)

  • Participate in campus events to promote FSP.

Programming and Community Outreach

  • Develop programs that promote understanding and connections between the Native American community and the RIT communities

  • Develop, plan and implement events that promote cultural awareness for the campus community

  • Collaborate with representatives from tribal nations to organize the biennial meeting of the Native American Advisory Council (NAAC) for the President of RIT.

  • Serve as a programming resource to the campus community

  • Work to facilitate collaborations between academic departments at RIT and members of the Native American community.

Learning & Teaching

Actively seek opportunities to:

  • Contribute to research at RIT.

  • Develop professional learning opportunities in regard to promoting an understanding of Native American history and current events.

  • To enhance RIT’s commitment to diversity through initiatives that focus on cross-cultural understanding and cultural identity

  • Keep up to date with relevant research and policy regarding Native Americans in higher education and those that impact Indian Country.

  • Identify best and innovative practices in Native Americans Education

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Masters Preferred

  • 3-5 years of experience working with underrepresented, nontraditional and/or first-generation students.

  • 1-3 years of experience providing counseling and/or academic advisement

Specialized skills:

  • Direct knowledge of Native American communities and sovereign domestic governments.

  • Excellent attention to detail and follow through while working independently.

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Ability to interact effectively with people in a positive manner that engenders confidence and trust.

  • Ability to cultivate an environment of collaboration and mutual trust, respect and cooperation that is inclusive to diverse perspectives and cultures.

  • Experience allocating and managing budgets.

  • Experience with student information systems and/or student portals

Preferred experience/skills:

  • Proven track record of developing student success and/or academic programs

  • Direct knowledge and experience working with Haudenosaunee tribal nations

  • Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies.

  • Evidence of leadership skills and an ability to maintain a culture of professional excellence focusing on student success.
