Job Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Academic Access & Success, the Director of the Multicultural Center for Academic Success works cross-divisionally and collaboratively with all campus constituents to enhance campus climate while implementing data-driven programs and initiatives focused on elimination of student achievement gaps as measured by RIT’s Strategic Plan (https://www.rit.edu/strategicplan/) , Greatness Through Difference (2018-2025).

The Director is responsible for overseeing the organizational development and support services of the Center. Managing programmatic initiatives aimed at enhancing the personal, professional and academic development of a diverse student population. The Director will lead broad-based retention programs and services that provide academic and transitional support to enhance student learning and promote student success, including leading and assisting Center staff in the development and implementation of university services, activities, programs and projects relevant to the Center’s mission and vision.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership and oversight for the Multicultural Center for Academic Success which includes the Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars Program, MCAS Scholars, DDI Summer Experience, MCAS Advocates and MCAS Affiliates Program.

  • Supervises and oversees development of Center staff.

  • Works collaboratively with all units in the division, and other academic and administrative units at RIT.

  • Identifies, develops and submits grants that support the programmatic mission of the Center.

  • Directs the collection and analysis of data to support assessment initiatives and program evaluation with specific attention to implementing data-driven diversity, equity, and student interventions focused on helping the university close graduation achievement gaps.

  • Provides updated reports on Center goals, student success, and program effectiveness.

  • Maintains appropriate financial oversight of the Center’s budget.

  • Presents to stakeholders, collaborative partners, advisory groups, parents, and community members as appropriate.

Program and Curriculum Development:

  • Assists in the development of the Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars Program, MCAS Summer Experience, MCAS Advocates, DDI Tutoring, Unity House collaboration, and MCAS Scholars academic programs.

  • Assists in the delivery and continuous development of a structured academic support program during the academic year.

  • Maintains a strong understanding of relevant theory, strategies, and research aimed at the academic support and success of students from underrepresented populations.

  • Cultivates philanthropic relationships in support of the Center through work with RIT’s Division of University Advancement.

  • Oversees financial student support and assistance initiatives for DDI Affiliated students.

  • Supports divisional programs that build community, fosters pluralism, and enhances the needs of diverse populations such as oversight of the MOSAIC Center, the DDI Family Meetings and the DDI Celebration of Excellence.

Service to students:

  • Responsible to serve as an advising coach for the Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars Program and monitor academic progress.

  • Oversees MCAS planning and execution of the DDI Summer Experience in collaboration with the Higher Education Opportunity Program.

  • Outreach and meet regularly with students to discuss needs, monitor academic progress, and assist with the resolution of academic and personal challenges.

  • Serve as a mentor and advocate to MCAS students.

  • Assess student needs for services and make referrals to appropriate campus and community agencies.

  • Works collaboratively with campus members and relevant offices to develop and implement programs and resources focused on retaining students as well as eliminating achievement gaps.

Required Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

Successful candidate must have a Master’s Degree plus 5-7 years of management experience working with first generation, low income, and underrepresented students in an academic setting or equivalent. We seek an experienced communicator with proven ability to correspond with a variety of stakeholders effectively.

Competencies Required:

  • Management experience, including staff supervision, and resource management experience.

  • Financial Management of Budget responsibilities.

  • Demonstrated ability for improving learning outcomes for historically underrepresented groups.

Skills:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Requires the ability to implement, manage, and evaluate effective programming

  • Experience in a higher education setting with budget, data and personnel management

  • Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of disadvantaged students

Preferred Qualifications:

Fundraising and experience establishing and strengthening relationships with private and public sectors.
