Volunteers of America Upstate New York's Children's Center services provides educational programs focused on early childhood development and school readiness for children 6 weeks through 12 years old. The center serves more than 500 children and families on an annual basis and provides additional support services such as a full-time Registered Nurse, family development services, on-going parent training, full-day care, and disability supports for children with special needs.

 

JOB SUMMARY:Under the supervision of the Early Childhood Education and Disabilities Manager, the Early Childhood Education Coordinator will work collaboratively with all Pre-K and Early Head Start staff to provide curriculum support and development (High Scope), classroom support with challenging behaviors, and tracking of program-related data and documentation.  The Early Childhood Education Coordinator will track services provided for all children with IEP’s to ensure compliance, and will work collaboratively with all outside service providers.  The Early Childhood Education Coordinator will also attend CPSE meetings with classroom teachers to advocate for the needs of specific children as needed. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Participates in team meetings and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and understand respective roles/duties of Pre-K and Early Head Start teaching staff

  • Provides in-class support to teachers through non-evaluative informal observation, modeling lessons, providing ideas and suggestions relating to best practices

  • Provides direct student support to small groups and individual students as needed

  • Facilitates teacher participation in outside training and classroom observations by providing additional support on teacher planning days

  • Assists the Early Childhood Education Manager with providing curriculum support to all classrooms

  • Assists the Early Childhood Education Manager with tracking and reporting of school readiness goals and other program-related outcomes

  • Coordinates and plans transition activities for families, classrooms, and children

  • Provides classroom teachers with support and assistance in preparing for annual ECERS & CLASS observations

  • Provides support to all classrooms with challenging behaviors

  • Tracks and inputs disabilities-related data into participant databases for all Head Start/Early Head Start-enrolled children

  • Liaisons with Rochester City School District and Action for a Better Community for disabilities-related communication and collaborative planning

  • Serves as the parent point of contact for the center for disabilities-related inquiries and concerns

  • Provides support to key summer programming including UnitedWay Kindergarten Readiness, Summer LEAP, School Age programs, and wrap care.

  • Assists with providing classroom instructional coverage, as needed

     EDUCATION & QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education (required)

  • Competency in High Scope Curriculum (preferred)

  • New York State Certified in Early Childhood Education (Birth-Grade 2) (required)

  • Minimum of 3 years teaching experience in Early Childhood (preferred)

  • Special Education Certification and Background (preferred)
