New York State Civil Service Fish and Wildlife Technician 1 (Seasonal) in Rochester, New York

Minimum Qualifications

30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries; marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography. Preferred Qualifications: Experience trailering and operating boats as long as 20 feet in length, interacting with the public and identifying salmon and trout. ## Duties Description The NYSDEC Lake Ontario Unit is filling seasonal Fish and Wildlife Technician positions based in Rochester, Monroe County working on the Lake Ontario Fishing Boat Survey to monitor Lake Ontario angler fishing success/effort and performance of stocked trout and salmon. The technicians are required to work weekend days and holidays, and half the weekdays. Scheduled work times vary with the changing daylight period. Technicians work in 2-week blocks of AM or PM shifts averaging 40 hours per week. Details will be discussed at interview. Technicians must effectively interact and communicate with the public, ask questions regarding angling experience on the lake, and accurately record angler answers and biological data. Processing fish for length, weight, clip and scale samples is required. Must be able to safely trailer, operate, and work onboard an 18’ boat nearly every work day. Technicians are required to work some overtime and in a variety of inclement weather conditions. Must work effectively both independently and as a team member. ## Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain and/or work in remote areas. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel and overtime may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Certification to operate motorized boats or personal water crafts will be required within 2 weeks after time of appointment. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.

Seasonal, hourly appointment beginning 3/25/2021 and ending no later than 11/30/21. Position is currently subject to funding. Program needs will determine actual termination date, which may be prior to 11/30/21.
