The University of Rochester seeks a Program Director for its Adult Neurology Residency Program, which is one of the top programs nationally (ranked #12 on Doximity) with 8 resident slots per year. The program excels at training outstanding clinicians, researchers and educators and is housed in a department that includes over 100 clinical faculty members representing all neurologic subspecialties. The program consistently fills from a national pool of highly competitive applicants, and its graduates pursue top fellowship positions. Many graduates have gone on to become leaders in academic neurology. The program director receives outstanding administrative support from the department and medical center. The ideal candidate would be an educator with interest in continuing the outstanding Rochester tradition of high quality program leadership with a focus on exceptional teaching skills, innovation, commitment to diversity and inclusion, and kindness.
Over the past 25 years, Dr. Ralph F. Jozefowicz has shaped the program into a highly organized, stable program with a high national reputation for quality and innovative neurologic education. The program successfully increased its yearly complement of residents from 6 to 8. Over the last 5 years, the curriculum has created formal programs in professional development, teleneurology, quality and safety, and business in neurology. The program director has support from multiple faculty members to ensure the success of the program. The Associate Program Director shares responsibilities including implementing the new teleneurology curriculum, leading the resident continuity clinic organization, and scheduling clinical coverage. The department’s Associate Chair for Career Development and Leadership has designed and implemented a successful formal mentorship program for the residency that includes recruitment and retention of faculty mentors and a formal curriculum. The department’s Director of Wellness has implemented many successful innovations to measure and improve resident wellness (for example, the residency has a weekly “wellness fuel gauge” that provides important data in addressing any areas contributing to burnout). The Associate Chair of Research serves as the Director of Resident and Fellow Research, and organizes a yearly Resident and Fellow Research Symposium. The Department has an active Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Antiracism, and Social Justice (IDEAS) council dedicated to increasing the diversity of Neurology trainees nationally and at the University. The IDEAS council has worked with the residency program to collect important data on recruitment metrics, and the program has made great progress over the last 3 years in recruiting individuals who identify as underrepresented in medicine. The growth and continued evolution of the program will build on this foundation, and be shaped by the vision of the next Director.
University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry
The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (URSMD) is a high-ranking medical school that is nationally recognized for excellence in neurologic education. The basic neuroscience course, called Mind, Brain, and Behavior (MBB) is a 9-week course in the 2nd year that encompasses neuroscience, neuroanatomy, neuropathology, neuropharmacology, psychopathology, and psychopharmacology. It is consisted rated as the highest quality basic science course at the medical school, and is among the top courses nationally. The neurology clerkship is a required 4-week rotation in the 3rd year, and is the highest rated clerkship at the medical school. It also far exceeds the national average in student ratings on excellence. This stellar medical school neurology program helps provide neurology residents with ample teaching opportunities, including chief residents intimate involvement in the 9-week course, teaching their own PBL group and serving as laboratory assistants in the neuroanatomy labs. The medical school program allows for a robust pipeline of students going into neurology for the residency program with nearly 8-9% of the class choosing neurology, which is more than twice the national average.
The Department of Neurology offers all major fellowship programs including ACGME-approved fellowships (e.g clinical neurophysiology, epilepsy, neuromuscular medicine, sleep medicine, vascular neurology), UCNS fellowships (e.g. headache medicine, neuromedicine critical care, neuro-oncology), and departmental fellowships including the unique NIH T32 Experimental Therapeutics fellowship that is a major draw for residents wishing to learn more about clinical trial design and implementation in the context of a specific specialty.

Based on this tradition, the next Director should lead the program into the future of graduate medical education with commitment to excellence, innovation, and scholarship. The University of Rochester Neurology Department has numerous faculty who have been dedicated to education research including multiple individuals receiving the ABPN Faculty Fellowship in Education Innovation, the University’s Deans Teaching fellowship, advanced degrees (eg, Masters of Health Professional Education), and other education leadership grants. This presents a great opportunity for collaboration with colleagues in medical education research and scholarship. Areas of opportunities in research scholarship include, but are not limited to, assessment of trainees, support of underrepresented individuals, innovative residency curriculum design and implementation, health equity education, resident research, wellness and mentorship initiatives.
The Program Director will oversee all aspects of the residency, be responsible for providing strategic guidance to residency support faculty, and work with University and GME leadership to participate in transformative initiatives. In short, the Director will be a guiding hand for the residency program’s continued growth.
