The Strong Public Programs Host in Rochester, New York

As one of the country’s largest history museums and one of the leading museums serving families, The Strong places the highest priority on providing outstanding service to its guests. The museum offers programs and activities for individuals of all ages to learn about the power and importance of play in their lives. The public programs host interacts with guests of all ages to provide quality service, regardless of specific assignment, as well as to meet and exceed guests' expectations to provide an exceptional museum experience and complete assignments in accordance with established team and museum standards.

This position requires a dynamic, outgoing, and energetic individual who can effectively engage a crowd of children and adults in various activities and is able to work a flexible schedule that requires weekends.

This is a seasonal, part-time position that is anticipated from May through August 2023.

Below are a few different functions within the public programs host position that are available.

Activities Host:

  • Facilitate program crafts and activities at specific stations. Model proper use of materials and supplies.

  • Keep work areas safe and inviting by cleaning up after activities. Restock and maintain inventory of craft and activity supplies as needed.

  • Engage with museum guests as a character performer, superhero, or face character, as requested.

  • Provide answers to guests’ questions, including information regarding daily events, programs, and museum membership.

  • Monitor safety considerations, handle minor emergencies appropriately, and call for assistance as needed.

  • Take initiative to identify and solve problems. Publicly support team decisions, even if they conflict with personal opinions.

  • Identify and act on opportunities to help and support the efforts of coworkers and staff from other teams.

  • Assist in various programs, as assigned.

Character Escort:

  • Ensure the safety of character performers and guests.

  • Facilitate positive, memorable meet and greet experiences between performers and guests.

  • Be present in assigned area, prior to scheduled meet and greet.

  • Effectively communicate with the performer using verbal cues and understand non-verbal cues from the performer.

Character Performer:

  • Provide positive, memorable meet and greet experiences.

  • Pose for photos with guests in an enthusiastic and engaging manner.

  • Be fully dressed in costume, in assigned area, prior to scheduled appearance.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the assigned character’s personality, story, and mannerisms, and clearly and concisely convey that to guests.

  • Effectively communicate with escort using non-verbal cues.

  • Ability to wear costumes that may include a large head, body, hands and/or feet.

Qualifications:

  • Strong communication and listening skills.

  • Ability to utilize verbal and non-verbal storytelling skills and talents to engage with museum guests of all ages and backgrounds.

  • Ability to work both independently and cooperatively.

  • Approachable, engaging, and enthusiastic about interacting with all guests in a positive manner.

  • Patient and respectful with guest and other team members.

  • Reliability and creative problem solving.

  • Ability to maintain a high level of physical energy and complete repetitive tasks while maintaining quality.

  • Ability to stand for two to three hours at a time without a break.
