The Role: Xylem seeks to hire a motivated Intern Developer to assist in updating legacy scientific software, and to implement new functionality in a breakthrough product. The output of this work will be directly leveraged in Xylem’s drinking-water digital twin platform to predict the fate and transport of chemicals within municipal systems, to help water utilities better manage the quality of water delivered to customers.

Essential Duties/Principal Responsibilities:

  • Read and understand technical literature about physical and chemical processes

  • Translate knowledge into scientific algorithms

  • Read, understand, build, and debug legacy C code

  • Develop testing methodologies to ensure correctness of scientific code

  • Work with a team to develop target APIs that will support broad needs

  • Participation in Xylem Watermark volunteer activities

Minimum Qualifications: Education, Experience, Skills, Abilities, License/Certification:

  • Top-notch communication skills – must ask questions and comfortably engage in dialog about what is being built.

  • Strong familiarity with the C programming language or similar background

  • Computer Science degree/certification or similar

  • Mastery of an IDE, build environment, and profiling tools

  • Motivated and self-directed – must work well in a remote-first team setting

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ years experience working with C codebases

  • 2+ years experience in Civil, Environmental, or other Engineering field

  • Familiarity with the fundamentals of chemistry and environmental processes

  • Strong working knowledge of algorithmic solution methods for partial differential equations
