Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee I Are you a high school senior about to graduate and looking to start a career? Unsure about your future? NYSDOT may be for you! Your primary goal as a Trainee 1 is to obtain your Commercial Driver License (CDL) and Large Dump Truck Certification. Our professional DOT staff will not only provide training to help you receive your CDL, but you will also be involved in regular roadway maintenance work. This work includes such tasks as flagging, patching potholes, beautification, guide rail repair, and doing other physical labor activities. Employee must be available to respond within one hour of being called. Overtime response and shift work are requirements for this job. How much will I make? Starting salary is $35,057. Advancement to a higher salary level will occur as soon as your CDL and Large Dump Truck Certification are obtained. What are the hours? Full time, 40 hour work week. Where are the jobs? Positions exist statewide! Employees may also be eligible for: -Annual Special Assignment to Duty (SAD) payment of $500, for working along the highway. -Annual Callout Bonus of $500, for responding to callouts during the snow and ice season. -Annual allowance for safety footwear. -Annual allowance of $65 for work clothing. Employees wishing to receive formal 3rd party CDL training at their own expense may be authorized paid time off to attend the training. Certain conditions apply. Benefits of Employment: -Generous leave: 13 annual vacation days, increasing to 20 days after 7 years; 40 hours personal time annually; earn sick days at a rate of 4.00 hours per bi-weekly pay period and 13 paid holidays. -Comprehensive health, vision and dental and prescription plans after 6 months continuous bi-weekly periods. -Retirement: employee contribution rate is based on your annual wage. Pension amount is determined by total years of service and final average salary.
