Skidmore College Summer Groundskeeper in Saratoga Springs, New York

Schedule:

Monday-Friday, 7am - 3:30pm or Tuesday-Saturday 7am-3:30pm

SUMMARY

Maintains grounds of college property and support events by performing the following duties:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned within classification.

  • Comply with health and safety directives to include the use and/or wearing of protective devices

  • Cuts lawns. Trims and edges around walks, flower beds, and walls

  • Prunes shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth or remove damaged leaves, branches, or twigs

  • Sprays lawn, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer, herbicides, and insecticides. Rakes and removes leaves and debris

  • Cleans grounds including pavement, parking lots, building entranceways/exits, and sports fields

  • Removes litter, debris and refuse

  • Removes snow from walks, driveways, entrances, fire hydrants, etc.

  • Spreads ice-melt on public passage ways to prevent ice buildup

  • Plants grass, flowers, trees, and shrubs. Waters lawn, shrubs and flower beds

  • Assists other trades in the maintenance of fences, gates, walls and walks

  • Cleans out drainage ditches, culverts, window wells and exterior stairwells

  • Operates a wide variety of hand tools, power equipment and vehicles

  • Move furniture, staging and other materials, including setup of items, as assigned

  • Submits work status, time and material reports

  • Maintain an interest in learning new ideas

  • Ability to speak and listen effectively and respectfully with supervisors, customers, and employees of the College.

  • Maintain an appropriate image and dress

  • Establish and maintain a high level of customer service

When assigned duties of refuse-recycling driver:

  • Operates a wide variety of fixed and mobile refuse and recycling hauling and compacting equipment

  • Cleans and removes loose trash from collection points and surrounding areas

  • Collects and delivers all necessary recyclable materials to disposal locations

  • Keeps equipment clean and maintains operating logs, to include checking and maintenance of fluid levels and tire pressure

  • Prepares trash pick up logs, equipment maintenance records, work requests for needed services and reports mechanical defects to Supervisor

  • Prepares trip logs, equipment maintenance records and work requests for needed services

  • Provide coordination and feedback of the campus recycling programs to supervisor

  • Maintain and interest in learning new ideas

  • Establish and maintain a high level of customer service

When assigned duties of Pesticide applicator:

  • Apply pesticides as directed by your immediate supervisor

  • Follow all necessary regulations for applications as required by Skidmore and all governing agencies, including all required documentation.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to utilize or learn basic computer functions.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Driver's License

New York State Herbicide & Pesticide Applicators License as required by employer.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; and toxic or caustic chemicals.' The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

  • The College reserves the right to reassign all personnel as necessary in the event of an absence or emergency.

  • May be required to attend employer sponsored classes or seminars aimed at improving skills.

  • Understand proper use of chemicals used in the performance of position duties and be familiar with the Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

  • May be required to work overtime or weekends with minimal notice.

Hourly Rate: $19.77 per hour per the contract.
