Skidmore College Summer SW-Pre-College Resident/Academic Assistant in Saratoga Springs, New York

The Skidmore Summer Pre-College Program offers academically advanced high school students from the US and abroad the opportunity to enroll in undergraduate courses for credit, primarily as residential students. The Pre-College Resident/Academic Assistant plays an invaluable role as an academic and residential leader carrying out the Pre-College Program mission and ensuring the success and safety of enrolled students. Pre-College Resident/Academic Assistant staff members work in collaboration with the Pre-College Resident Director (RD) and Assistant Resident Director (ARD) to mentor and support high school students in adjusting to college life academically and socially; teach weekly academic skill building workshops, lead study sessions and provide academic mentoring; plan and supervise academic and co-curricular programming; foster an engaging and inclusive living and learning environment for all students; enforce policies; manage conflicts; and ensure the safety of all participants and smooth operation of the program. This position assumes a high level of responsibility and oversight for the academic success, safety and wellbeing of high school students. Applicants must be current Skidmore students.

The Pre-College Resident/Academic Assistant must be in good academic and disciplinary standing at Skidmore College and demonstrate the ability to support the intellectual development of young adults, consistently exercise good judgment, complete assignments, foster a sense of community among students and staff from diverse backgrounds, work collaboratively as a team member, manage on-call and variable weekly work schedules, and thrive in a continually changing environment. They need to possess excellent leadership, communication and organizational skills, professionalism, maturity and flexibility, and approach the work with genuine interest and a positive outlook. The Pre-College Resident/Academic Assistant is required to:

  • Live in the Pre-College residence hall throughout the duration of the program (June 23-Aug. 4).

  • Actively participate in all day/evening staff orientation programming the week of June 24-28.

  • Be fully available during Arrival Day (July 1) and Departure Day (Aug. 3).

  • Be available to the Pre-College Program on nights and weekends throughout five-week program.

  • Participate in daytime on-call duty rotation for emergencies and other urgent student needs.

  • Create an enriching learning environment by leading academic workshops and study sessions.

  • Lead weekly suite meetings to mentor students navigating academics and campus living.

  • Plan, promote and facilitate activities to foster community, wellbeing and college preparedness.

  • Chaperone on- and off-campus extracurricular programming (day, evening and weekends).

  • Be engaging, visible and accessible to students and staff on a daily basis throughout program.

  • As a role model, abide by all Skidmore and Pre-College policies, treat every participant/colleague equitably and respectfully, and demonstrate professionalism at all times on- and off-duty.

  • Instruct and enforce all program policies, procedures and curfews and conduct nightly rounds.

  • Assist with conflict mediation and immediately report unsafe and inappropriate behavior.

  • Follow protocols as first line of response/triage in the event of a residence hall emergency.

  • Attend weekly staff meetings and one-on-one meetings with the RD/ARD.

  • Oversee administrative paperwork, including room inspections and program evaluation forms.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The Pre-College Resident/Academic Assistant reports to the Resident Director and Pre-College Program Director and receives further supervision from the Assistant Resident Director. This is a temporary, full-time residential position from June 23-August 4 that requires living with students and working nights, weekends and on-call hours.

MUST BE A CURRENT SKIDMORE STUDENT. We seek candidates with a demonstrated interest in working with college-bound high school students and engaging with them both intellectually and in a residential setting. Successful candidates should have previous or transferrable leadership experience working with high school students, preferably in residential environments, such as RA and/or camp counselor experience; IGR and/or mediation training; tutoring; and applicable campus leadership roles. Cover letter and excellent references (including at least one Skidmore faculty/staff referral) are required. Given the level of responsibilities of this full-time position, the Resident/Academic Assistant position must be considered the staff member’s first priority; therefore, a maximum of 15 hours per week of outside commitments OR one Skidmore College course are permitted. Permission for any outside commitment/course must be approved in advance by the Pre-College Program Director. Days off are not permitted during specified program dates, including staff orientation, Arrival/ Departure days, and the first week of the program (including July Fourth holiday). Due to Protection of Minors guidelines, all residential staff must sleep in the residence hall each night of the program, even when not formally on duty, and are not permitted to have visitors or guests inside the residence hall at any time during their Skidmore Pre-College employment.

Pay Rate: Compensation: $4,100 plus single occupancy room in Pre-College residence hall and dining hall meal plan included while on contract.
