Schenectady City School District 1:1 Aide- Extended School Year Summer Program in Schenectady, New York

This position exists in a school district and involves responsibility for assisting a teacher by performing a wide variety of non-instructional duties which are related to the teaching process. The assignment delegated to individual employees in this class vary greatly. They include duties of limited scope such as helping children in lower grades with their outer clothing or other tasks requiring specialized skills or knowledge such as speaking a foreign language or assisting in the production of a television program. Consequently, the typical work activities listed below are intended to demonstrate the many different kinds of work performed in this class, although individual positions are limited to one or a restricted number of such assignments. Incumbent does related work as required.

Teacher Aide Expectations

  • Performs various clerical duties including the correction of test papers, recording of grades, maintaining files and preparing statistical reports;

  • Reads in a foreign language from a prepared script for tape recording purposes;

  • Assists in overseeing the operation of the language laboratory equipment;

  • Reads to and plays records for children in lower grades;

  • Helps to set up science laboratory equipment, conduct experiments and perform limited review of student laboratory reports;

  • Helps to prepare and produce television programs;

  • Provides piano, guitar or other musical accompaniment;

  • Assists in physical education classes by issuing equipment and helping in other non-teaching duties;

  • Has charge of supplies and equipment, locker rooms and swimming pools;

  • Assist teachers in supervising recreation and lunch periods and in study halls;

  • Oversees students passing between classes and in various parts of the buildings and connecting grounds;

  • Monitors girls and boys lavatories;

  • Helps children in lower grades with wearing apparel;

  • Guides children at street crossings;

  • Performs a variety of related work as required.

    Paraprofessional Key Qualities

  • Working knowledge in the specific field where specialized duties are involved; ability to establish effective relationships with children; ability to perform simple clerical functions

Job Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

(A) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; OR

(B) One year experience in a capacity dealing directly with the supervision of children such as in a day care facility or assisting with the Scouts or 4-H programs; OR

(C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
