Fox Creek Farm Farm worker / laborer, vegetable farm in Schoharie, New York

3 Fulltime H-2A Seasonal Jobs available 4/1/2024-11/9/2024.

Duties: Grow vegetable and flower transplants in greenhouse and coldframes, manually preparing soil mixes, filling flats, seeding. Manual watering, weeding, thinning and potting on of transplants.

Manually plant, cultivate, hand-weed and harvest vegetables, fruits, berries, flowers, and field crops. Use hand tools, such as shovels, spades, digging forks, trowels, hoes, tampers, dibbles, pruning hooks, shears, pruners and knives.

Main crops grown on farm are beans, beets, pepper, brocolli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, chard, corn, cucumbers, eggplant, gourds, tomatoes, tomatillos, kale, lettuce, mesclun, melons, onions, pac choi, peas, potatoes, pumpkins, radish, scallions, spinach, squash, strawberries, raspberries, flowers and culinary herbs.

Duties include tilling soil, picking rock from prepared beds, and applying fertilizers; transplanting, weeding, thinning, and/or pruning crops; cleaning grading, packing, and loading harvested products.

Must be able to distinguish fruits and vegetables for ripeness and quality and be able to quickly and efficiently harvest fully ripe fragile vegetables, flowers, and berries, with less than 1% bruising or other types of harvest or handling damage.

Job requires multiple hours per day of bending, crouching, kneeling and lifting. Must be able to lift 60 lb. harvest bins, boxes, or produce bags 20-50 times per day.

Aid in the construction, maintenance and repair of trellises, farm buildings, farm roads, and fencing.

Operate, maintain, and repair hightunnels, including the pruning and trellising of tomatoes.

Operate walk-behind mowing equipment.

Set-up and operate overhead and drip irrigation equipment.

Woodland management, including the harvest of firewood.

Apply fertilizers to crops.

Inform farmers or farm managers of crop progress. Identify plants, pests, and weeds to determine the selection and application of pesticides and fertilizers.

Must be able to work outside in inclement weather including heat, cold, rain and snow.

Must be able to communicate in English and record daily work tasks and quantities of crops harvested.

Take care of poultry, including moving fence and housing, feeding, watering, collecting, washing, and packing eggs, as well as butchering chickens.

Due to the fragile nature of our crops and the demand for quality from our customers, workers must comply with general sanitary practices such as washing hand before and after handling our produce, and to prevent infecting our crops with Tobacco Mosaic Virus, must not use any type of tobacco products.

Requirements: * Three months of verifiable experience in the aforementioned required. * Exposure to extreme temperatures.
* Lifting requirement of 60 lbs. * Repetitive movements, extensive walking, extensive pushing/pulling, and frequent stooping/bending.
