Crops/Commodities: annuals, perennials, nursery stock, vegetable plants.

This job requires a minimum of 3 months of prior experience working in a nursery handling both manual and machine tasks associated with commodity production and harvest activities. Workers must be able to perform manual as well as mechanized activities with accuracy and efficiency. Plants, cultivates and maintains in condition for shipping and resale to customers nursery stock. Pots seedlings, prunes, spaces, irrigates and culls plants to ensure availability of marketable products. Packs, labels, pulls and stores plants according to variety. Weeds, loads/unloads truck and wagons. Workers will perform work including but not limited to planting, digging, mulching, transplanting, mowing, watering in nurseries and seasonal holding houses. Count and inventory plants. Propagate plants from cuttings. Remove plastic from seasonal holding houses in spring and cover seasonal holding houses with plastic in fall. Assist with building seasonal holding houses. Plant and dig field grown plants, burlap roots, perform general maintenance of field grown plants. Fill, lift and carry various size pots with soil and plants weighing as much as 60 pounds. Plants must be handled carefully so that minimal leaves, limbs and roots are broken during transplanting process. Performs any other duties involved in the maintenance of plant materials and nursery stock and maintenance of holding yards and shipping areas.

Work is to be done for long periods of time. Workers are expected to perform duties including loading/unloading trucks. Workers will lift up to a height of 5 feet, push, pull or carry heavy objects weighing up to 75 pounds, for long periods of time. Workers should be able to work on their feet in bent, stooped or crouched positions for long periods of time. Work requires repetitive movements and extensive walking. Workers will make fast, simple, repeated movements of fingers, hands and wrists. Workers must be able to bend, stretch, twist and reach out with the body, arms and/or legs. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, honey bees, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or related chemicals may affect a worker's ability to perform the job. Work required in fields when plants are wet with dew and rain, and may be required during light rain, snow, moderate winds, direct sun, high humidity and extreme temperatures. Temperatures may range from 10 to 100 F. Workers will be required to work during occasional showers not severe enough to stop field operations and in high humidity. Workers should be physically able to do the work required with or without reasonable accommodations. Saturday work required. Must be able to lift/carry 75 lbs.

In addition, workers are required to perform variable tasks such as the following: hand cultivation, irrigation, ditching, shoveling, hoeing, hauling, ground preparation, weeding, shrubbing, cleaning and repairing greenhouse/nursery structures, seed beds, racks, or grounds, incidental crop set up, gardening and other tasks related to nursery operation.

Work also includes mechanized field work using power equipment.

Workers must be able to comprehend and follow instructions and communicate effectively to supervisors.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 3 months of prior experience working in a nursery.
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures, repetitive movements, extensive pushing or pulling, extensive walking or sitting and frequent bending or stooping.
  • Lifting requirement of 75 lbs.
