Cornell Cooperative Extension Day Camp Program Director, Peconic Dunes Camp, Southold, NY in Southold, New York

Coordinate and direct the development and implementation of a specific 4-H camp program (e.g., sports, expressive arts, environmental science, outdoor education, etc.). camp counselors to effect quality programming in subject area. Assist with program scheduling and management. Responsible for the coordination and operation of one evening program per week and assist in other all camp activities as needed. Assist with program and staff evaluation processes.

Required Qualifications:

  • Interest, knowledge, and skills in the specific program area.

  • Ability to teach, supervise and motivate staff

  • Strong organizational and leadership skills

  • Emotional maturity, good health, and vitality.

  • Must meet the minimum age requirement for a particular program area to comply with New York State Department of Health regulations.

  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.

  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate or defined in the offer letter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • College degree in education or another relevant field.

  • Two years of experience supervising others.

  • In-depth knowledge of all activities.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

Program Responsibilities:Program Assessment – 10%

  • Regularly observe and evaluate program staff and provide constructive feedback; regularly inspect program space and equipment for safe operation.

Program Development – 10%

  • Research, develop and prepare educational resources (e.g. goals, lesson plans, skill-building activities, hands-on projects, experiments, etc.) for program staff.

    Program Delivery – 5%

  • Support assigned counselor staff to run program area activities

  • To teach program area activities as needed.

  • Support the all-camp activities such as Turtle Games, evening programs, rain/heat day programs, and Closing Campfire .

  • Assume primary leadership responsibility for one evening program

    Program Evaluation – 10%

  • Support evaluation processes for program and camper satisfaction.

  • Prepare final program evaluation reports with future recommendations; prepare year-end program inventory and supply order.

Administrative Responsibilities:Direction – 30%

  • Develop and implement staff training activities during pre-camp orientation.

  • Provide highly complex administrative leadership to plan educational programs.

  • Provide leadership to ensure that the creation of the Camp’s Plan of Work is within the scope of the statewide Plan of Work.

  • Oversee the process to interpret the Peconic Dunes Camp program direction to plan educational programs.

  • Lead problem- solving and conflict-resolution processes that effectively address camper and staff concerns, behavioral problems, and personal conflicts.

  • Plan the delivery of established positive youth development based on 4-H Essential Elements, the Search Institute, and other research -based information.

  • Design community-oriented camp culture that emphasizes acceptance, cooperation, and empathy

  • Direct program staff guidance and communication, including conducting staff meetings, directing staff evaluation processes, implementing performance improvement strategies as needed, and recognizing outstanding performance.

Management – 25%

  • Ensure compliance with all camp policies and procedures that protect camper and staff health and safety.

  • Ensure program staff maintains high standards of health and safety in all program settings and activities.

  • Communicate regularly with program staff to proactively identify and address areas of concern regarding health and safety.

  • Administer the daily program schedule effectively, balancing activities and daily routines; ensuring adequate staff coverage; and adjusting for weather-related or other exigencies.

  • Ensure staff are documenting critical incidents through CIMRs (Concern, Incident, and Medical Report).

  • Manage post-incidents in consultation with the director of the workgroup, including resolution with the camper(s) and staff, incident debriefing, and updating policies and procedures as a result of the incident.

  • With other Program Directors and Logistics Coordinator, develop daily and weekly schedules of educational and recreational activities that offer variety, balance, and challenge.

  • Manage evaluation processes for staff performance, program and youth development outcomes, and camper satisfaction.

Coordination/Operation – 5%

  • Inventory program equipment and supplies and prepare program area during pre-camp orientation, order program materials through camp requisition process.

  • Assist with weekly camper arrival and departure processes, camper orientation and other functions as needed.

Professional Improvement – 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and address changes and Association priorities.

  • Collaborate in activities that support Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions

  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.

  • Be familiar with and follow applicable federal, state, and local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement, and standards.

  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.

Salary: Starting at $7,700.00 to $8,800.00 full summer (depending on experience)
