Description

Responsible for the management and administration of a competitive USA RUGBY/National Collegiate Rugby athletic program; consisting of a developmental plan for practices, recruiting, travel arrangements, game planning and general coaching of a successful rugby program.

Examples of Duties

  • Schedules and conducts regular practice sessions in and out of season, as permitted National Collegiate Rugby, USA Rugby and University rules and regulations. Develops and implements strategies for motivating student-athletes to perform at maximum levels as both individuals and a team.

  • Collaborates with the Director or Rugby regarding the recruitment and selection of student-athletes. Ensures compliance with USA Rugby guidelines for contacting and entertaining prospects.

  • Oversees the conditioning and training of team members to ensure that student athletes are physically prepared for competition.

  • Supervises assistant coaches, part-time assistant coaches and graduate assistants if applicable. Provides orientation, training and guidance as needed.

  • Develops and publishes team rules regarding practice, class attendance, punctuality, dress code and general standards of behavior, with the approval of the assigned administrator. Enforces such team rules with appropriate disciplinary actions.

Supplemental Functions:

  • Arranges a competitive event schedule, in conjunction with the assigned administrator.

  • Fundraises on behalf of the team and university in conjunction with the Advancement office, Director of Rugby, and Associate Dean for Student Life. Organizes women’s alumni groups, providing advancement and stewardship leadership.

  • Compiles data and reports to meet Departmental and University requirements.

Typical Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.

Three (3) to five (5) years coaching experience, preferably at a USA Rugby recognized institution.

Certification and/or Licensure

  • USA Level 200 Certification or willingness to get certified when next opportunity is offered.

  • CPR, First Aid and AED Certification or willingness to do so.

  • Valid Driver’s License

    Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship.

  • Have a solid knowledge of USA RUGBY regulations and guidelines governing the recruitment and retention of student-athletes and skill in budget preparation and management. Must possess the ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures and have knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the specified sports program. Remains current on relevant college athletics regulations and guidelines

  • Ability to successfully recruit and retain student athletes. Makes public appearances on behalf of the University as well as create substantial support for program through ambitious marketing and community service efforts.

  • Excellent writing skills and the demonstrated ability to develop written reports and action plans. Good organizational, oral and recruiting skills are needed.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and have the self-motivation and the ability to stay current with emerging technologies.

  • Ability to establish and nurture effective working relationships with associates, colleagues, students and members of the University staff. Maintain professionalism when dealing with all staff and other customers while fostering positive working relationships.
