Job Summary – (Summarize the primary purpose of the position)

The IT Infrastructure and Security Administrator is responsible for overseeing the University’s IT infrastructure and ensuring its security. This role is the primary person responsible for the University’s network infrastructure, and involves managing the deployment, maintenance, and monitoring of network and server systems, with a strong emphasis on cybersecurity and cloud technologies. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in IT infrastructure management, a solid background in cybersecurity, and expertise in cloud computing.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions: (indicate percentage of time in right column – total time must add to 100%)

Infrastructure Management:

  • Oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of the University’s IT infrastructure, including servers, storage, network devices, and cloud services.

  • Ensure high availability and performance of all IT systems and services.

  • Manage and monitor network infrastructure, including wireless access points, routers, switches, firewalls, and VPNs.

  • Installation and termination of various types of networking/phone media.

  • Troubleshoot infrastructure problems.

Cybersecurity:

  • Execute the University’s comprehensive cybersecurity strategies to protect IT infrastructure and data.

  • Conduct regular security audits, vulnerability assessments, and risk analysis.

  • Monitor for security threats, respond to incidents, and enforce security policies and procedures.

  • Stay updated on the latest cybersecurity threats and best practices.

  • Manage and operate security measures for cloud-based resources.

  • Research, recommend, and implement infrastructure and cybersecurity solutions.

System Administration:

  • Perform regular system updates, patches, and upgrades to ensure systems are secure and up-to-date.

  • Manage user accounts, permissions, and access controls.

  • Monitor system performance and troubleshoot issues as they arise.

  • Perform server maintenance and monitoring.

Cloud Services:

  • Manage the University’s SaaS infrastructure in Microsoft’s 365 and Entra platforms.

  • Optimize cloud resource usage and ensure security and compliance of cloud services.

  • Implement and manage cloud-based applications and services.

  • Assist with implementing and monitoring both operational and cybersecurity tools for on-premises and cloud infrastructure.

Project Management:

  • Lead IT projects and initiatives aimed at improving the University’s IT infrastructure.

  • Collaborate with other departments to understand their IT needs and provide technical solutions.

  • Responsible for managing all University construction/renovation projects with regards to communications needs. Coordinates the activities of any outside contractors.

  • Assists with developing, negotiating and implementing all vendor relations regarding University communications networks and systems.

  • Technical interface with other departments with any projects that may affect the SBU infrastructure resources.

Documentation and Training:

  • Maintain detailed documentation of IT infrastructure, configurations, and procedures.

  • Cross-train other staff on University systems..

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Education: (indicate required or preferred)

Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related field, Master’s degree preferred. Demonstrated experience with the Cisco Internetworking Operating System (IOS). This should include the ability to work with routing protocols, network ACL’s, VLAN configurations, QoS, VoIP, VPN, Firewalls, and WLAN along with an understanding of network security best practices. The ability to successfully complete a criminal background check.

Years of Experience – (required or preferred number of years and in which specific areas)

Preferred: 6 years in a related technical role.

Required: 4 years in a related technical role.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrates continual ownership of their primary responsibilities. Demonstrates a willingness to reach out and help others when they see a need to do so.

  • Handle highly confidential materials and to maintain confidentiality in all situations relating to the University. All information must be kept in strict confidence and should not be discussed anywhere.

  • Ability to balance priorities to accomplish assigned tasks within the required time frame and to be able to shift quickly between several tasks without loss of continuity.

  • Have a mastery knowledge level of Microsoft Office software, (specifically Word, Excel, and Outlook). Knowledge of networking systems. Have the desire as well as the ability to research and master emerging computer technologies.

  • Able to identify, evaluate and solve communication network issues to include network services, (including routers, wireless access points, firewalls, servers), voice communication systems, University communication circuits including voice T1 lines, dual load-balanced Inet connections, and numerous POTS lines.

  • Ability to perform research relating to computer issues and make recommendations for improvements.

  • Proven effectiveness in dealing with a wide range of professionals, staff, and administrators. Frequently communicates general information to University constituency, however, some situations may require the ability to relay complex information with tact and diplomacy.

  • Identify opportunities for improvement and makes constructive suggestions for change.

  • Establish and maintain effective communication & working relationships with internal and external constituents. Ability to accept supervision, assignments, change, and correction.

  • Maintain a program of personal and professional development appropriate for areas of responsibility

  • Carry out all responsibilities and objectives in a professional manner.

  • Maintain professionalism when dealing with all staff and other customers while fostering positive working relationships.

  • Accept and render constructive criticism in a professional manner.

  • Adhere to the governing documents, policies and procedures established by St. Bonaventure University.
