ESOL Instructor (Hourly) - Staten Island

Compensation: $45.00 / hour
Adult English Language and Literacy (AELL) is the direct service provider of ESOL and adult literacy instruction for the Library. Professional teachers facilitate free instruction to adult patrons in reading, writing, speaking and listening from a 0 to 8th grade level in both in-person and online classes. Instruction is offered in 3, 10-week cycles and 1, 4-week summer cycle.
Teach ESOL classes that promote English language proficiency and digital literacy for students assessed at NRS levels 1-6
Follow the prescribed curriculum in a communicative language teaching environment during class-time
Submit lesson plans that demonstrate communicative language teaching in alignment with the prescribed curriculum
Instruct adult ESOL students in classes and learning experiences, which will lead to the achievement of their educational and personal goals
Assist in the managed enrollment process to recruit students and maintain student records
Participate in prescribed professional development pertaining to adult basic education and Library strategic priorities
Required Education, Experience & Skills
Required Education & Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree required, with training and/or experience in ESOL
Minimum 1 year of experience teaching adults in both in-person and online settings
Successfully demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and Zoom
Successfully demonstrated knowledge of technology-assisted learning, instructional software, video, audio and distance learning.
Lesson plan creation using a backward design approach
Experience administering standardized assessments
Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work well with a variety of people, in a multicultural setting, involving a variety of team situations.
Ability to meet deadlines for administrative tasks.
Please Note: Effective August 2, 2021, absent a qualifying exception for medical or religious reasons, newly hired employees of the New York Public Library must present proof of receipt of a COVID-19 vaccination and may not begin employment at the Library until 14 days after their receipt of their second dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or 14 days after their first dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Newly hired employees who need additional time to receive their vaccination prior to their start date may request an adjournment of their start date with their hiring manager. The Library will consider such requests on a case by case basis, depending upon the Library’s operational needs, among other factors. Pre-Placement Physical Required?
- Hourly ESOL Instructors provide instruction in 3, 10-week instructional cycles in the fall, winter, and spring and a 4 week summer cycle. The summer 2022 instructional cycle runs August 1- August 28. Fall cycle runs October 3- December 17. Winter cycle runs January 30-April 2, and spring cycle runs April 24-June 30. Additional hours may be available between instructional cycles to assist with new student testing and placement, but are not guaranteed. Extra hours are made available based on Best Plus and TABE Administrator certification, student demand, and budget availability. Branch library setting
