Syracuse. Watts Architecture & Engineering. Wetland Scientist/Ecologist. Watts has an opening for an entry level or junior Wetland Scientist/Ecologist. The candidate will be an integral part of a small, dedicated environmental consulting team within the firm. She/he will organize and carry out natural habitat consulting services to support various construction, intuitional and land development projects. Primary activities include stream and wetland delineations, threatened and endangered species evaluations, Waters of the United States permitting primarily in New York State. The Wetland Scientist/Ecologist will also prepare National Environmental Policy Act documents, communicate with State and Federal regulators and personally complete field investigations to support the completion of complex permitting processes. The successful candidate should have a bachelor's degree or strong interest in environmental engineering, biology, ecology, or related natural science focusing on botany and natural habitat assessments. This position is open to candidates with no professional experience however a strong interest in completing field investigations in wetland areas around western New York is essential! Days working in the field will likely average 20 to 40 days a year, primarily in the spring and summer. Candidates that can show experience working for an environmental non-profit, environmental consulting firm or a state or federal regulatory agency will be given consideration. RESPONSIBILITIES: * Delineate wetlands and invasive species. * Assess the presence of threatened or endangered species. * Coordinate jurisdictional determinations through State and Federal Agencies. * Prepare State New York and Federal 404/401 permits and pre-construction notifications. * Complete field work including: soil assessments, flora and fauna identification, habitat assessment, and inspection and monitoring activities. * Prepare New York State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQR) Documentation, National Environmental Policy (NEPA) Documentation including the coordination of other report components such as contaminated materials, cultural resources, air/noise/energy issues. * Regulatory agency coordination and correspondence. * Preparation and submittal of delineation and monitoring reports to agencies. * Experience with ARC GIS and GPS data collection a plus. * Using a Trimble GPS or similar unit to locate wetland flags a plus.
