The registered nurse is responsible for managing complex patient situations, acts as a patient advocate, and provides supportive assistance to all members of the healthcare team. The incumbent is a Registered Nurse who is responsible for the clinical, administrative, research, and educational aspects of the assignment.
The following functions are unique to Cardiology Device RN. Device RNs in this program are evaluated on the four dimensions listed further below in addition to supporting and collaborating with the functions listed here: Functions unique to Device RN: Interrogates Implanted Cardiac Devices, including Defibrillators, Pacemakers, and loop recorders, analyzes and interprets data from devices, and recommends appropriate medical therapy to medical staff. Actively manage remote monitoring of all Implanted Cardiac Devices, including Defibrillators, Pacemakers, and loop recorders, analyzes and interprets data from devices, and recommends appropriate medical therapy and follow up to medical staff. Conducts a variety of device tests to trouble shoot function/malfunction of multiple different implantable devices in many settings including clinics, hospitals and outreach sites. Performs, understands and interprets non-invasive electrophysiology studies, inductions of ventricular fibrillation testing, AV optimizations, V-V optimizations and cardioversions. Collects, investigates, analyzes and interprets data as he/she extracts it from any and all implanted devices and then presents information with recommendations to Electrophysiologists, Cardiologists, surgeons, and other physicians or providers. Evaluates the functioning and effectiveness of Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT) devices. Analyzes Implanted Loop Recorders (IRL) with a complete understanding of waveforms and the knowledge to differentiate artifact and device anomalies from actual events that will provide accurate interpretation of arrhythmias and appropriate patient treatment. Optimizes the function and effectiveness of each device for the enhanced benefit of the patient. Monitor and evaluate multiple different makes and models of pacemakers, defibrillators, and loop recorders. May be required to assist in, or perform, the coordination, implementation, evaluation, recruitment, and enrollment of subjects in clinical device research. May be required to assist in, or perform the following: Completes data collection, file case report forms, sends and communicates collected data to the sponsor, Institutional Review Board (IRB), and collaborates with sponsors throughout the study i.e. audits, version updated, quarterly reports etc. Teaches and counsels patients and their families about the device capabilities and its impact on their wellbeing, post-operatively and in an ongoing manner through device follow-up. Other functions related to Device management that may not be specified here. The Device Nurse is expected to manage the Device Clinic, patients, understand new and relevant Device information, and learn any necessary new information pertinent to Devices and management of them. General Functions of Cardiology department Nurse Provides nursing support when Cardiology outpatient clinic when needed. Such support includes Dobutamine Stress testing, nuclear stress testing, Stress echo testing, echo bubble studies, assisting with patients in critical situations, assisting EKG technicians with day to day functions in outpatient clinic, or filling in for EKG techs or Cardiology RN as needed Performs patient vital signs, ECG. Monitor and record vital signs per Cardiology Department protocol. Pre-procedure patient assessment, pre-procedure checklist documentation. Peri-procedure nursing documentation. Serves as a resource to clinical and non-clinical staff. Provides staff education and in-services related to invasive cardiology services. Communicates with patients, Cardiology providers, referring providers, and Cardiology Department staff. Collaborates with schedulers to Schedule and processes paperwork for patient tests, cardiac catheterizations and other invasive procedures, labs, device procedures, or post-procedure appointments using appointment management system when needed Ensure procedure rooms are clean, stocked appropriately and ready for the next patient; ensure equipment is clean/sterile and in working order. Hand-off report to respective nursing units when applicable Communicates and coordinates patient care between physician providers and Cardiology NP/PA team. Reviews patient records for allergies, prior cardiac procedures, procedure pertinent information and consults appropriate staff with issues and/or concerns. Contacts all Veterans scheduled for invasive cardiac procedures to ensure they understand pre-procedural instructions. Other duties as assigned within clinical scope of practice to support advanced cardiac care and procedures to the inpatient and outpatient populations. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Graduation from School of Nursing. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agency, and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant. The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) Or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), an accrediting arm of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN).The CCNE accredits bachelors and master's degree programs.OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. In these programs, students are given a certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX and should submit this certification to VA prior to appointment. Students do not earn a BSN, but receive a MSN degree upon completion of course work. A copy of the MSN transcript must be provided to VA. Bridge programs that confer a master's degree also fully meet the education requirement, even though a Bachelor's Degree is not awarded. OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Registration. Condition of Employment. A registered nurse (RN) will have a current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia. The appointing official may waive this registration if the RN is to serve in a country other than the U.S. and the RN has registration in that country (e.g., Philippines). The RN must maintain a current, full, active and unrestricted registration to continue employment with VA. English Language Proficiency. RNs appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). Preferred Experience: Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Critical care experience: Emergency Department, ICU, Cardiac Cath Lab Cardiology experience in procedural setting Experience with Device implantation procedures, managing implantable devices during initial implantation procedure Heart Rhythm Society Device certification preferred. Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS) Minimum of 2 years' experience managing, interrogating, reprogramming, and optimizing Implanted Cardiac Devices and organizing Device Clinic operations Proficiency in Windows based programs (Word, Excel, Power Point) NOTE: ACLS/BLS Certifications: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (\\ACLS) and Basic Life Support certifications are required for this position. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
