BNL's Nonproliferation and National Security Department (NN) contributes to U.S. nuclear security and safeguards efforts by assisting in the development, analysis and assessment of policies that strengthen international regimes, collecting and analyzing data to identify trends and threats to the U.S. and international communities, developing and implementing new technologies to address existing and emerging threats, and strengthening the domestic and international institutions that form the framework of the nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear security regimes through training and engagement. The Nonproliferation Policy and Implementation Group conducts studies to assist the U.S. government in formulating policy related to nuclear nonproliferation and international safeguards and needs assistance to study the decline of US nuclear energy expertise and how this could impact the United States' ability to influence nuclear non-proliferation internationally. The Nuclear Energy Assistant will work on this project under the supervision of the Department Chair and other Department Leaders.
The Nonproliferation and National Security Department seeks an individual with knowledge and experience in research studies, data science, global affairs, international safeguards, nonproliferation, and/or national security who can assist the Department in conducting research on the United States' nuclear energy programs. The Nuclear Energy Assistant will assist with hosting visitors, mentoring undergraduate interns, and coordinating participation in NNSA's Summer Safeguards Lecture Series. The successful candidate will be given the opportunity to attend BNL lectures, conferences and training related to international nuclear safeguards to develop an understanding of the field.
Essential Duties and Responsibilties:
Conduct research study on the impact of the decline in US nuclear energy expertise on global nuclear nonproliferation.
Mentor undergraduate interns.
Assist in planning for and hosting visitors at BNL.
Provide support to special events.
Set up Internet meetings for BNL's participation in the NNSA Safeguards Summer Lecture Series.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Oral and written English language skills.
Ability to use Word and Excel, Internet browsers, and Adobe Acrobat.
Attention to detail.
Ability to conduct research independently in an office environment.
Experience in using web conferencing tools (Skype, BlueJeans).
Interest in contributing to scientific endeavors and publications.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Understanding of global political issues at the intersection of energy, economy and nonproliferation.
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
The main scope of work will take place in an office environment, but complementary activities may require access to the laboratories of BNL scientists and engineers. The successful candidate must be able to conduct themselves safely in BNL laboratories by completing required training, interpreting laboratory safety information postings, and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.
The successful candidate may have the opportunity to travel alone or with other Department representatives to attend professional meetings or make presentations at colleges or universities in the United States.
