ABOUT US: The Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York, Inc. is a non-profit public interest law firm. We provide free legal information, advice and representation to people who are unable to afford a lawyer in the matters* described below. The program area includes (13) counties: Broome, Chenango, Cayuga, Cortland, Delaware, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego and Otsego. LASMNY has full-time attorney positions available immediately in the locations listed below. Admission to New York State Bar is required. Law Graduates with strong writing backgrounds may be considered.
Utica: Citizenship Project; Violence against Women Act.
Cooperstown Office: Family Court.
Binghamton Office: Family Court; Victims of Crime Act; Violence against Women Act.
Oneonta Office: Violence Against Women Act.
New Paltz Office: Farmworker Law Project; Managing Attorney & Staff Attorney.
Below is a brief description of each position:
*Citizenship Project (CP) - Provides legal education, advice and representation to immigrants seeking to become Unites States citizens through the naturalization process. Admission to New York State Bar is preferred.
*Family Court (FC) - Family law matters, including custody/visitation, paternity, support violations, family offenses and abuse/neglect matters.
*Farmworker Law Project (FLP) - Represents migrant and seasonal farm, nursery and food processing workers across the entire New York State. Prior working experience with the farmworker community, immigration issues or in other programs which aid the working poor.
*Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) - General practice, but not limited to, housing, public benefits, family, disability, employment, protective order, consumer, education, health and elder law. Criminal Court Accompaniment is required.
*Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) - Domestic violence and matrimonial matters. Additional areas could include public benefits, housing and disability.
Salary depends on experience.
