Responsible for:The development of profitable, sustainable growth in assigned territory.


  • Profitability

Know and understand various methods for determining profitability, including but not limited to accident year loss ratios, calendar year loss ratios, allowable loss ratios, and return on sales (ROS) measurements.

Develop territorial/state target market plans which emphasize growth in profitable targets and deemphasize growth in unprofitable targets.

Develop territorial/state line of business growth plans that are in adherence with the Marketing Plan Classifications.

Develop territorial/state agency plans which emphasize growth in those types of agencies where we are most profitable and located in areas offering us the greatest potential for profit.

Monitor territorial/state plans taking corrective action where necessary to insure territory is

meeting profitable growth goals.

Spearhead agency/territorial review process.

Ensure timely payment of Company's money.

Understand industry results and the impact they have on territorial plans.

  • New Appointments

Solicitation of the type of prospect that is consistent with territorial plans.

Maintenance of adequate prospect file.

Consistency of disciplined prospecting activity.

Completion of appointment papers.

Ability to evaluate the agency.

Ability to make the appointment.

Ability to develop newly appointed customers into profitable producers.

  • Agency Plant Management – Production Initiatives.

Generate creative ideas to produce business.

Establish and monitor individual customer commitments (i.e., business plans, loans, overrides, bonus), and initiate corrective action where necessary.

Utilize available marketing tools (@your.service, WorkFlow Manager/ComPro, Marketing

desktop, Risk Advisor, Customer Bonus, Sales Contest, Break the Bank, Loan Program, Leads, Customer Recognition Program, promotional material) to achieve territorial objectives.

Generate sufficient submission activity to meet territorial objectives, including pre-screening/preapproving risk.

Monitor agent's submission activity – efficiency/declination ratios, and take corrective actions when needed.

Utilize Workflow Manager as a cross-selling and renewal retention tool.

Continually know, communicate, and sell competitive advantages of Utica National.

When requested, make sales presentations with agents to prospective insureds.

  • Loyalty/Relationships/Communication

Facilitate relationships between all levels of agency personnel and key Company personnel.

Develop rapport with industry peers and trade associations.

Coordinate territory functions/breakfast meetings.

Develop relationships with internal departments necessary to achieve corporate objectives.

Inform producers of new merchandising areas.

Use ACE to inform agent-customers of success/new business write, product enhancements, etc.

  • Training Customers/Automation

Educate customer on product offerings, automation, forms and brochures, and Company


Coordinate territory functions/breakfast meetings (i.e., breakfast meetings, training sessions,

product fairs).

  • Job Knowledge

General knowledge of Company programs (i.e., Safety Group Programs, Customer Bonus Plan, Sliding Scale Dividend Plans, Customer Recognition Program, etc.).

Knowledge of insurance applications.

Knowledge of target market programs and how to sell them competitively.

Ability to evaluate a risk.

Ability to provide or assist agents with a proposal.

Ability to utilize Company automated systems.

  • Product and Pricing

Gather competitive marketing intelligence regarding pricing, coverages, and market actions.

Assist in development of new product/program-P&C proposals.

Understand state and local regulatory and legislative requirements.

  • Sales Approach/Process

Utilization of corporate sales process.

Utilization of DAQ (Diagnostic Agency Questionnaire).

Use of company programs to generate new business - Gold level plans, overrides, loans, etc.

  • Administrative

Ability to control own expenses.

Maintain agency files where applicable.

Call reports, utilizing web based call system.

Know and properly administer the various components of the customer bonus plan.

Follow marketing representative automation procedures.

  • Personal/Professional Development

Participation in insurance and civic clubs.

Participation in educational programs (IIA, ARM, CPCU, CIC, etc.).

Participation in in-house programs.

  • Perform all other tasks assigned by manager.



Four year college degree in general studies/liberal arts or business administration or equivalent business experience


Minimum 3-5 years as a marketing representative or underwriter


Excellent interpersonal skills

Marketing representative should possess excellent writing and negotiating abilities

Travel is required approximately 75% of the time

Driver’s license and a safe-driving record

Ability to schedule work at various hours as necessary
