Cornell Cooperative Extension Camp Wyomoco Summer Camp Custodian/Maintenance - Varysburg, NY in Varysburg, New York

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Wyoming County CAMP WYOMOCO has an opening for a temporary, seasonal, Summer Camp Custodian/Maintenance staff for the 2019 season (late-May through mid-August 2019).

Under the direction of the Leadership Team, the Camp Custodian will be responsible for assisting with day-to-day maintenance and cleaning operation of a comprehensive summer camp program serving approximately 165 residential campers, day campers, and 50 staff.

It is the responsibility of the Custodian to keep the facilities and grounds clean, attractive, and in good condition to insure a safe, clean, and orderly environment. Additionally, the Custodian will assist with grounds keeping and minor building/equipment repairs.

This is a residential summer camp operating in July and August. Camp Custodian is not required to live on camp property but housing may be available if desired.

Physical requirements include bending, lifting, sitting, standing, stooping, stretching, and walking. Occasionally lifting and carrying up to 75 pounds. Hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity, and a normal range of eye-sight and hearing required to communicate with staff and manipulate equipment. Must operate with daily exposure to the cold, heat, rain, sun, and varying other weather conditions, as well as under irregular working hours in a camp environment.

Maintenance Responsibilities
  • Assist camp leadership team with the daily maintenance operations of summer camp including all aspects of the cleaning, maintenance, and repair of 4-H Camp Wyomoco to insure a safe, clean, and orderly environment.

  • Cleans all areas including bathhouses, restrooms, cabins, buildings, offices. Replenish supplies and fills dispensers.

  • Picks up trash and litter. Empties and cleans trash, garbage receptacles.

  • Clean and maintains equipment such as refrigerators, stoves, hot water heaters, and microwave ovens.

  • Maintains paper goods and supplies.

  • Assists with general maintenance and repairs, such as minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry, roofing, flooring, and painting as required.

  • Alerts management team of any major problems or repairs needed.

  • Maintains exterior and interior of buildings and grounds.

  • Mowing, clearing trees and brush. Safely operate equipment including tractors and/or mowers for use in maintenance of the grounds.

  • Assists with the maintaining safe and reliable equipment and vehicles as required.

  • Assists with maintaining written plans and records for facility, equipment, and grounds.

  • Perform general building maintenance duties which may include, but are not limited to, carpentry projects, changing filters and light bulbs, clearing plumbing clogs, repairing leaking faucets.

  • Perform janitorial duties which include, but are not limited to, wet and dust mopping, dusting, trash removal, recycling, window washing, meeting set up, pond cleaning, painting, and general cleaning as requested or needed.

  • Washes windows, walls, sinks and fountains.

  • Moves, arranges and sets up furniture and equipment for sporting and special events.

  • Mops floors, wash tables and benches, and cleans eating areas in compliance with established standards.

  • Emergency cleanup resulting from vandalism, breakage, spilling or illness.

  • Stacks, assembles and stores furniture, equipment and supplies.

  • Prepare and submit expense reports and/or vouchers in a timely manner per established policy and procedures.

  • Maintain open but professional communication with staff, parents, and campers.

  • Work closely with Leadership team to insure camper and staff safety in all activities.

  • Be familiar with all emergency procedures. Thoroughly understand camp emergency action plans and help implement procedures if/when necessary.

  • Transport self, supplies, and/or resources as necessary.

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of program participants at all times. Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries, maintain a safe environment, and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.

  • Adhere to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.

  • Assist Supervisor with implementation of camp crisis management plan and/or emergency management procedures as required.

  • Appreciate and embrace diversity in all interactions with staff, campers, parents, volunteers and the public.

  • Interact with campers, staff, parents, families, and the general public in a professional manner at all times.

  • Aware of and adhere to all policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.

  • Ensure complete confidentiality of sensitive information regarding campers and staff at all times.

  • Carry out assignments and other duties as directed by supervisor.

## REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent education.

  • Experience relevant to the position.

  • Ability to perform physical labor.

  • Understanding of cleaning compounds and chemicals, and their safe, efficient use.

  • Valid drivers’ license, proof of insurance, and access to reliable transportation. Daily and/or occasional travel may be required.

  • Ability to work flexible hours which include evenings and weekends. (Camp sessions run Sunday through Friday).

  • Ability to meet acceptable background check standards.

  • Ability to transport/move supplies and equipment with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Ability to climb stairs, walking on uneven terrain in all types of weather in an outdoor/indoor setting with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read and write proficiently) in English.

  • Ability to interact in a professional manner at all times.

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and assume responsibility with general guidelines and direction.

  • Work effectively without close supervision.

## PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate's Degree or technical/vocational school degree in business, human resources, secretarial science.

  • Camp maintenance experience preferred.
