Seneca County Navigation Officer in Waterloo, New York

VACANCY: At present there are current seasonal vacancies for this position.

RESIDENCY: Candidates must have been legal residents of Seneca County or one of the six (6) contiguous counties for one (1) month preceding the date of the written test. Preference in appointment may be given to successful candidates who have been legal residents of the municipality in which appointment is to be made for at least one (1) month prior to the date of certification and are residents of such municipality at the time of appointment.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The work involves responsibility for patrolling the navigable waters within the geographical jurisdiction of Seneca County. Supervision is received by senior employees of the Sheriff's Department. The position does not entail supervision. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative Only): Operates Sheriff's patrol boat in order to maintain the safety of private vessels; Checks vessels for proper safety equipment as provided by the New York State Navigation Law; Inspects marine sewage and controlled devices; Keeps records and logs of patrols; Removes debris from navigable waters that may be hazardous to boaters; Monitors parks and recreation buoys; Provides assistance to vessels in need or distress; May operate a marine radio.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the New York State navigation law and local boating ordinances; good knowledge of the geography of local waterways; good knowledge of the operation of maintenance of power boats and marine equipment; skill in the operation of a power boat; ability to make inspections; ability to work with people in stressful situations; ability to prepare written material; ability to understand written and verbal instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTANCE OF APPLICATIONS: Demonstrated ability to operate power boats and marine equipment. Ability to swim. Please attach documentation verifying your ability to operate power boats and marine equipment ie, boating/marine license. Written verification explaining ability to swim. Lifeguard certification, swimming lessons certificate may also be supplied.
