Cornell Cooperative Extension Hidden Valley Summer Camp Health Director - Watkins Glen, NY in Watkins Glen, New York

The mission of Hidden Valley 4-H Camp is to provide youth with a fun, residential camp experience under the guidance of positive role models that emphasize community building, positive social interactions, environmental awareness and skill building.

The summer camp Health Director is needed to respond to emergencies and carry out programs of health and safety throughout the summer. The Health Director is required to live on camp property while camp is in session.

Some physical requirements of this position could be endurance including prolonged standing, bending, stooping, walking long distances, running, hiking, climbing, and stretching; requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities; requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.; willing to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours with limited or simple equipment and facilities; and with daily exposure to the sun, heat, cold, rain, sun, and other varying weather conditions, and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, etc.

Duration

Our Health Manager may apply for a minimum of our Weekend Stayover, one week or for multiple weeks.

Our weeks are as follows:

Week 1: July 5-10

Week 2: July 12-17

Week 3: July 19-24

Weekend Stayover: July 24-26

Week 4: July 26-31

Week 5: August 2-7

Week 6: August 9-14

The summer camp season includes one week of mandatory camp staff training June 26 through July 2 and 6 weeks of residential camp that run from Sunday afternoon through Friday evening. Specific dates for our 2020 season are July 5 through August 14. We also have one weekend coverage required for our Weekend Stayover July 24 through 26.

Essential Functions

  • Follow the New York State Department of Health Safety plan & ACA guidelines for camp staff and campers
  • Assist in the implementation and documentation of written plan
  • Follow specific plan for Bat’s in cabin with Schuyler County Public Health
  • Review all camper health records prior to camper arriving at Camp
  • Prepare special health needs alert and make certain that appropriate staff are aware of camper specific needs, i.e., bedwetting, all allergies
  • Follow-up with prescribing medical professional when questions or concerns arise over medication (prescription or over the counter)
  • Keep in contact with parent over health issues, as appropriate
  • Assist the Camp team with a camper who is homesick
  • Accept and record all medications on arrival day from parent and return medications to parent on pick up day of camper
  • Keep all medications locked in the Health Director office
  • Follow medication disposal plan for any medication not picked up by parent
  • Record and report all admissions of the infirmary
  • Live on site Sunday afternoon through Friday afternoon
  • Administer and record all medications and treatments according to physician’s orders
  • Check on first aid kits for emergency use by all camp staff
  • Re stock kits with missing supplies
  • Physically assess all camper’s health status upon arrival at camp including head check for lice
  • Maintain all records of camper’s and staff (hospital visits, Doctor visits, medication, injuries, dietary habits)
  • Assist in the training of staff on all health and safety procedures
  • Enforce camp rules and regulations; model standards for conduct as they pertain to camp staff and campers.
  • Enforce regulations in accordance with the Health and Safety Plan, approved by the NYS Department of Health
  • Follow all guidelines and recommendation for ACA accreditation.
  • Establish good rapport and communicate with parents or guardians of campers on all matters related to camper experience.
  • Serve as a positive role model in language, appearance, and behavior.
  • Support and embrace diversity in all interactions with campers, other staff members, volunteers and parents. Implement programs that engage diverse backgrounds, interests and learning styles.
  • Arrive on time for all scheduled activities and duties.
  • Participate in all required orientation, training, and/or in-service meetings and trainings as scheduled/required.
  • Maintain a clean, professional, well-groomed appearance while on duty keeping in compliance with the Association and Camp Dress Code Policy at all times.
  • Keep all relationships on a platonic basis during camp hours and camp season.
  • Be familiar and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.
  • Assist Supervisor with implementation of camp crisis management plan and/or emergency management procedures as required.
  • Adhere to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
  • Interact with campers, staff, parents, families, and the general public in a professional manner at all times.
  • Aware of and adhere to all policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.
  • Ensure complete confidentiality of sensitive information regarding campers and staff at all times.
  • Other duties may be assigned as required.

Required Qualifications

  • 21 years of age or older.
  • Licensed Practical Nurse, Registered Nurse, Physician’s Assistant or Medical Doctor and licensed to practice in the State of New York.
  • Current First Aid, Responding to Emergencies (RTE) & CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification.
  • Experience working with youth.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Camp Manager, entire camp staff, campers and camp families.
  • Incorporates Team Work and Flexibility into their daily work style.
  • Ability to get to remote locations on camp property over rough terrain.

Salary and Benefit Details

Salary commensurate with experience. Benefits are not available for this position.
