Akima Seasonal Material Handling Laborer in West Point, New York

Material Handling Laborer will perform physical tasks to transport or store materials or merchandise. This is a great opportunity for college students and recent grads! Summer Full-Time Temp Supply Laborer position supporting the US Military Academy Cadets, from May 19 through August 29, 2025. Great workers will be asked to return every Summer!

Responsibilities

  • On a regular basis and following clearly specified instructions, performs a variety of laboring, warehousing, and service issue tasks at any and all of the established warehousing and customer service locations within the Military Academy and its training sites, including temporary work sites, as well as the commonly established work sites.

  • Warehousing: Loads and unloads trucks, forklifts, and other conveyances; moves, packs, unpacks, sorts, segregates, arranges, stacks, piles or relocates a large variety of supply and equipment items. Assists in the setup, assembly, breakdown, of items or groupings of items for issue.

  • Issue Points: Following specific instructions issues items to customers, receives items from customers and places in designated bins, baskets and similar locations according to clearly established directions. Places stock into appropriate clearly marked locations.

  • Performs general cleaning of warehouse areas, service issue points, linen rooms, loading docks, freezers, etc. Maintains housekeeping practices IAW prescribed instructions, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), sanitation policies and procedures.

  • As a member of a work group, performs laboring tasks to include, but not limited to assembling packages of items for issue to cadets. Manually loading and unloading materials and supplies; moving materials within facilities.

  • Assisting in the picking up and delivering items and truckloads of items. This is typically characterized by heavy and very heavy lifting. It is also characterized by the need to exercise care to avoid damage or injury to materials, other workers, or customers and to ensure that safe work habits are practiced. 100%.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Receives direction at the beginning of assignments, and intermittent direction during the assignment as is necessary.

  • Responsible for completing work after getting initial oral or written instructions. Work is checked in process or upon completion for compliance with instructions.

  • Must work and perform effectively as a member of a team assigned to various tasks.

Qualifications

  • Ability to operate, control and clean materials handling equipment (e.g., dollies, hand trucks, carts, utility carts, etc.), and other equipment).

  • Ability to work safely with tools (box cutters, pliers etc.)

  • Ability to perform several tasks or processes which require, remembering directions, sequences, etc.

  • Ability to lift and carry heavy and very heavy items.

  • Must be a US Citizen.

  • Must receive a favorable background check and drug testing results

Physical Effor t:

  • Stands, stoops, bends, and works in tiring and uncomfortable positions.

  • May be required to work at a rapid pace for prolonged periods.

  • Frequently lifts and carries materials weighing up to 50 pounds, and regularly is required to lift, carry, and handle items weighing over 80 pounds.

  • When working as a member of a team, often lifts the heaviest objects with the assistance of another worker or workers.

Working Conditions:

  • Works inside and outside subject to heat, cold, damp, drafty, or poorly lighted areas.

  • May work on open docks or storage yards. Work may be dirty, dusty, and greasy.

  • The incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, and bruises; falls from ladders; or injury from material handling and other equipment.

  • Required to utilize and wear appropriate safety gear.
