Position Overview The Ordinary Seaman - General Vessel Utility (GVU) is an essential member of the crew and sets a strong example with regard to safe working practices and good seamanship on board. This vacancy is on the M/V AMERICAN COURAGE. Primary responsibilities while ship is underway include:

  • While assigned to the Deck Department, assists deck officer on watch as directed including look-out duties, cargo residue clean-up (shoveling, operating wash down hose, etc.) and deck de-icing during colder operating season. Handle mooring lines during docking and undocking. Painting and chipping on deck, in engine room and in conveyor tunnel. Cleaning the house of the vessel and removing garbage in passageways and common spaces. May perform lookout duties when needed and approved by the Captain.

  • While assigned to the Engine Department, assist engine officers as directed with maintenance, taking on stores, soogying engine room. Assist Conveyorman as directed with conveyor area clean-up and maintenance. Cleans up engine room spaces including chipping and painting. Assists Engineers with any maintenance. Takes on stores. Assists with fueling. Does sanitary work as required. Cleans, operates incinerator, as required. Such maintenance will include duties such as painting, soogying, general housekeeping, cleaning up of the tunnel and elevator and preparation of machinery for upcoming unloads.

  • While assigned to the galley, assist Chief Cook as directed incl. cooking preparation, setting tableware and staging food/drink prior to meals, cleaning of stainless steel, dishes, and stowing and clearing of food/drink after meals. Mops galley and crew and officer dining room floors daily.

    Primary responsibilities at the dock include:

  • While on deck, assists deck officer on watch as directed including participating in vessel shifting and handling mooring lines, opening/closing hatch covers (incl. hatch clamps, etc.) and cargo hold wash down hose operations. Assist with cargo spillage on deck or in tunnel when directed.

  • While assigned to the Engine Department, assist Conveyorman as directed as Gateman incl. cargo hold gate operation and system monitoring.

  • While assigned to the galley, take on stores and supplies as directed by the Chief Cook.

    Other Responsibilities: The duties listed above are not intended to be a comprehensive list of all potential job assignments on board the vessel. This position may be assigned additional responsibilities not listed above during fitout, layup, or on other occasions as directed by a supervisor. Tours: Our navigation season operates for 10 months of the year, with a mandatory break in service for winter layup between January and March. Permanent unlicensed seamen typically work 2-3 tours per year lasting 60-120 days each. Temporary positions are given work assignments of 30-120 days. Working Hours: During the navigation season our vessels operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Based on operational necessity, some positions are day workers and others are assigned to watches; however, all employees must be flexible and available to work overtime or different hours when needed. Requirements

  • US Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential

  • US Department of Homeland Security Transportation Worker Identification Credential (“TWIC”)

  • Ability to join and depart the vessel for assignments at any time throughout the season.

  • Ability to satisfy physical standards established by the US Coast Guard and pass periodic physical examinations as directed by the Company’s Medical Review Officer.

  • Ability to pass a US Coast Guard required chemical test for dangerous drugs.

  • Must be eligible and legally able to enter Canada.

  • Extensive travel is required throughout the Great Lakes region aboard a commercial cargo vessel, in a physically remote environment, and subject to extreme seasonal weather conditions.
