Windham Mountain Resort COMPETITION FREESTYLE HEAD COACH in Windham, New York

Overview of Position: The Competition Freestyle Head Coach is responsible for overseeing all aspects of their team, including developing and facilitating a team specific training curriculum, organizing, leading, and directing daily training sessions, and effectively communicating training, event schedules, and logistics with athletes, parents, and coaches. The Head Coach must be an active and certified member (Level 100 minimum) of USASA and have current SafeSport certification. This is a part-time seasonal position on weekends and holiday periods from mid-November through early April, with the possibility of full-time seasonal work for the right candidate.

Job Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Develop a team-specific training curriculum in alignment with the Fundamentals of Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding, and consistent with PSIA-AASI, USASA, and the direction of the Children’s Program Manager

  • Oversee groups of athletes in varying on-snow training environments

  • Organize, facilitate, and deliver high-quality on-snow training sessions for athletes

  • Communicate training schedules, hill space, equipment needs, and necessary logistics to athletes, coaches, and the Children’s Program Manager

  • Collaborate with the leadership team to create, develop, and implement a staff development program that enhances the quality of coaching and training for the Competition Freestyle program

  • Assist with organizing logistics for home and travel events and competitions

  • Adhere to and lead all policies and procedures particularly regarding guest and employee safety

  • Deliver exceptional guest service to all resort guests

  • Fulfill a season long work commitment

  • Ability to travel to away events when necessary required

  • Other undefined duties may be required periodically

    Job Qualifications and Skills:

  • Skiing/Riding Ability:

  • USASA Level 100 Certification (minimum) required including background check and Safesport training

  • Previous coaching and/or competition experience required

  • PSIA-AASI Certification preferred

  • Must have a strong understanding of the Alpine Responsibility Code and Park SMART

  • Teaching Skills:

  • Ability to collaborate on long-term goals and short-term objectives with the SRS leadership team that will deliver relevant and practical training content

  • Manage information, activities, terrain selection, and pacing of athletes to achieve desired outcomes, as well as mentor and develop other coaches in this area

  • Foster a culture with coaches and athletes that promotes play, experimentation, and exploration of skills and mountain terrain appropriately

  • Adapt training plans and content to the changing needs of the athletes throughout training sessions and throughout the season

  • Facilitate the athlete’s ability to reflect upon experiences and sensations to highlight skill development

  • Manage emotional and physical risk in an alpine environment appropriately to challenge athletes to enhance their skills and tactics

  • Technical Skills:

  • Convey and apply accurate technical information for activities being coached in alignment with the coaching philosophies of the Program Director

  • Observe and evaluate movement patterns and skills, and effectively prescribe information to enhance movement patterns, skills, and tactics of athletes and coaches

  • Understand the Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding Fundamentals as they relate to Freestyle disciplines

  • People Skills:

  • Develop relationships with all stakeholders based on trust to create an environment in which skill development is likely to occur

  • Engage in meaningful two-way communication with athletes, coaches, and peers to create and sustain alignment with training and coaching strategies

  • Identify, understand, and manage your emotions and actions in a manner that fosters an effective coaching environment for athletes

  • Recognize and influence the behaviors, motivations, and emotions of athletes and coaching staff to promote alignment of training and development strategies

  • Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to regularly and consistently move equipment or people weighing up to 50 pounds

  • Must be able to position self to access boots, skis, snowboards, or other equipment on the ground or snow surface for yourself and/or students

  • Must be able to observe and identify (visually and auditorily) potential hazards and obstacles including but not limited to safe trail and traffic merging, appropriate lift riding, changing snow conditions, and avoidance of other people and obstacles

  • Must be able to safely walk, hike, ski or snowboard, and navigate uneven terrain with snow and ice-covered hills and surfaces

  • Must be able to ski or snowboard comfortably and safely on all mountain terrain, including designated freestyle terrain up to 8 hours per day

  • Must be able to work in any outdoor winter weather conditions for up to 8 hours per day

  • Must have ability to speak clearly so listeners can understand and must be able to understand the speech of another person

  • Must be able to deliver and receive written communication to complete class lists, timecards, incident reports, and other essential paperwork, and have the ability to read communication delivered by the company including but not limited to emails, work assignments, bulletin board notices, and resort signage

  • Other physical demands that may be occasionally required are as follows: Pushing and/or pulling, stooping, kneeling, and reaching

    Work Schedule and Conditions: We are in the business of providing an Above and Beyond product and guest experience. Traditionally our busy periods are during weekends and holidays which you will be expected to work. You can also expect to be asked to work extra hours or days on occasion, especially during the holidays.
