IBM 2023 Intern Research - Exploratory Physical Sciences Sr Researcher in Yorktown Heights, New York

Your Role and Responsibilities

Start and end dates for this Internship are during Summer 2023 (12 weeks) at IBM Research.

The Exploratory Physical Sciences program at IBM Research is seeking candidates who will contribute to foundational research topics in Applied Physics and Material Science. Currently, positions are open to 2 distinct areas: New Materials for Information Technology and AI for Physics and Materials.

Candidates should possess one or more of the following:

  • A background in Physics, Material Sciences, Electrical Engineering or Chemical Engineering

  • Track record of co-authoring technical reports and publications

  • Programming experience in scientific computing

  • Requirements for New Materials for Information Technology:

  • Experimental experience in conducting research in solid state physics

  • Experience performing transport measurements: electrical, magneto-transport, optomagneto-transport

  • Experience with cryogenic/variable-temperature experiments

  • Knowledge about device fabrication and layout design

  • Preferred: Knowledge in topological materials, quantum transport physics, and semiconductor physics

  • Requirements for AI for Physics and Materials:

  • Experience with the development of AI models of physical phenomenon or materials properties

  • Detailed validation of these models against sample data

  • Preferred: Experience with physically-consistent computationally-efficient models of complex physical phenomena or properties of materials

At this time, an in-person program is planned, and candidates would need to work in the IBM Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY or IBM Research Center Almaden in San Jose, CA.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

Candidates should possess one or more of the following:

  • Candidates should possess an undergraduate degreein Physics, Material Sciences, Electrical Engineering or Chemical Engineering, and be pursuing a graduate degree in same

  • Candidates should be pursuing their Ph.D. degree

  • Track record of co-authoring technical reports and publications

  • Requirements for New Materials for Information Technology:

  • Experimental experience in conducting research in solid state physics

  • Experience performing transport measurements and/or cryogenic/variable-temperature experiments

  • Knowledge about device fabrication and layout design

  • Requirements for AI for Physics and Materials:

  • Programming experience in scientific computing (Python, C, C++)

  • Experience with the development of AI models of physical phenomenon or materials properties

  • Experience in validation of AI models against sample data

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Knowledge in topological materials, quantum transport physics, or semiconductor physics

  • Knowledge of physically-consistent computationally-efficient models of complex physical phenomena or properties of materials
